I missed SoCal’s wild weather last week because I was exploring parts of British Columbia. I’m rarely far from the ocean, and in Vancouver I biked around and through Stanley Park, enjoying the ease with which I left the urban environment and entered the natural world. Except for the road into the park from the city, it’s surrounded by water.
The experience was not unlike leaving the canyons of NYC’s Wall Street for the expanse of Central Park. We need places to get away from each other.
No doubt that’s one reason I’m drawn to the great expanse that is the ocean. At any time of year, I can stand with my back to the homes, buildings and industrial plants lining L.A. County’s beaches, breathe deeply and relax.
And so, upon my return from any journey, I head for the beaches south of LAX. Today, the waves, which were still churning from last week’s storms and throwing up great sprays of white water, were backlit by the late afternoon sun. It’s good to be home.
