Tim Ray: A Year Ago Today

A year ago today, the sun was shining, the sky was a rich spring blue. It was a perfect southern California day.

Except that my dear friend and classmate Tim Ray passed away. This is what I wrote to my classmates at Scripps Institute of Oceanography where Tim was a PhD student and I was a (much older) Master’s student.

1980-2011

Tim was so engaging, enthusiastic, energetic, thoughtful and uber-fit that it’s hard to believe, and terribly sad, that he’s no longer with us. That magnanimous heart of his gave out this morning. He always made me laugh and taught me something through every conversation we had. I miss him.

Today, the sun is shining, the sky is a rich spring blue. It’s a perfect southern California day.

And my memories of Tim are as positive and bright and filled with light as he was.
